We tend to think of change as meaningful only in big chunks because we tend to focus on the results not the process. The reality is that CHANGE HAPPENS in our life EVERY DAY. Every decision and action you take, no matter how small, affects your life and in effect creates change. The same is true for actions you do not take, and more often than not it’s those things we fail to act on that shape the course of our life. Yet we often deny that our choices (translated: actions) determine our reality. Our lives did not develop overnight, but have an expectation that we can change them in a day. We want what others have (a “runner’s” body, six-pack abs) but rarely take the time to acknowledge what it takes to get it (miles logged over months and years, 5 am workouts day in day out, healthy choices most days). Instead we minimize their achievement and justify our inaction (“You are so lucky to have a runner’s body, I wish I could look like that but it’s not in the genes”). I’ll grant you that some things we have no control over, at 5’4” I am unlikely to look like a 5’11” runway model no matter how hard I work at it, but barring the height difference, it’s the dedication to healthy eating and physical activity that (at 40+ and after 3 kids) allows me to comfortably wear a bikini, not being “lucky”. Instead of focusing on what we do not have, let’s spend more time figuring out what it would take to get it and if it’s worth it for us. It really does not matter what we decide as long as our actions reflect our decisions (start a running regimen if you want to complete a 10K, core strength regimen, aerobic activity and a healthy diet for that six-pack) otherwise it’s just wishful thinking. It only takes a heartbeat, the time to make a decision to do something, to begin to change your life and each subsequent action to turn it into your dream. In the end it comes down to ownership, your life will change, tomorrow will be different than today and only you can choose to be an active participant or hand over control and wish it was different.
