The “Chicken Soup for the Soul” TV show on CBS showed an interesting exercise this weekend…A Blackboard in NYC asking people to write down the one thing they regret the most. An interesting thing happened everyone who wrote something wrote about something they DID NOT DO as their biggest regret. That is correct not one person wrote down something they did as a regret. I doubt that their lives were perfect and they never made any mistakes so it stands to reason that WE REGRET THE THINGS WE DO NOT DO more than the mistakes we make. Think about your own life, do you have any regrets? What would you put on that board?
There was a second part to the exercise. When they were done they gave those same people a cloth and asked them to erase the board. Seems silly but we carry our regrets around like anchors, never letting go, never moving on, letting them weigh us down and keep us from DOING NEW THINGS. Cleaning that board helped people let go, reminded them that it is possible to clean the slate and start something new. I think that we can all benefit from a little mental cleaning now and then. So I leave you with this quote from the show “Everyday is a clean slate! Do the things you will regret NOT doing” starting today!
