Food is a vital component of a vibrant life. It may seem a little serious when talking about food but it’s important to give it the attention it deserves. Over the past few weeks I have written mostly on the general subject of making life change more manageable. The goal for me has always been to make personal change and growth something people want to do instead of dreading, and illustrate that heroic sacrifice is not necessarily the only way to live a healthier life. The truth is that while I am passionate about personal growth and change I am also crazy about food and nutrition. It makes sense, I am a nutrition professional, but I am also a working mom and food snob that firmly believes that eating healthy food does not mean a lifetime of boring, tasteless meals while avoiding any number of “bad” foods.
Many questions about eating healthy
Not surprisingly, over the years, I have received many questions from friends, clients and even strangers around food and eating. The questions range from ideas for weeknight meals, to recipe makeovers, eating out, family meals, healthy lunch options, picking the “right” foods, diet plans and in general how to fit eating healthy into our busy, over scheduled lives. There are many ways to answer them because no two people are alike so I will do my best to provide some ideas that everyone can adapt to their life. Unfortunately if I tried to give ideas for all these topics in one post it could quickly turn into a book and send most people packing, instead I am going to break it up into more manageable pieces. Stay tuned for topic specific posts coming soon. In the mean time I am creating other resources you can use.
Food resources
If you are interested in cooking, baking and dessert ideas you can find suggestions on my Pintrest page. Take a minute to click now, follow and check back regularly for recipes and meal ideas selected for taste and often convenience and (in most cases) tested on and approved by my family. The pins are organized into popular topic boards but feel free to send me a note or comment if there are specific categories that you would like suggestions for. Beyond Pintrest look for my personal recipes and recipe modification ideas in future posts. I would love to hear from you about the food topics you are most interested in, or food questions that cause you the most angst odds are that others have the same questions.
For now I want to leave you with a thought. Food is important. It is important to our physical and mental health and well-being. It is also an important part of our social experiences and has the power to connect us with others as few other things can. Food is a vital part of our life that is meant to be savored and enjoyed. The incredible variety of foods (fresh, frozen or prepared) available to us provides us with the opportunity to broaden our tastes and enjoy a variety of foods that delight our taste buds while optimizing our health.
Healthy food choices abound
Online recipes (with detailed instructions) and grocery delivery services mean that just about anyone can cook and enjoy delicious meals in less time than going out (and often in the same time as takeout) and with fewer “diet” regrets. Increased transparency at restaurants and eateries makes it easier to select healthier options or enjoy indulgences fully informed and without guilt. So take a few minutes this week to create a menu, browse some recipe ideas and pick one day, one meal to experiment with a new recipe, maybe a new combination of ingredients you like, or something completely new. If you like tacos try a fish taco recipe. If meat is your game, find a plant based recipe to try. Weeknights are chaotic, dust off your slow cooker (prep everything the night before, and then turn it on in the morning) or try an Instant Pot (it has been a total game changer in our house) recipe. The possibilities are endless you just have to give it a shot. Happy Experimenting! and let me know how things go.
